Being a Veggie food lover, Chennai
Hello Chennaiites,
It’s time we all stood up in ovation of the great Chennai city that has so much to offer in terms of tradition, cuisines, mix of cultures, cosmopolitan life style( well, almost!!, but we are getting there). With the introduction of malls, stores like Big Bazaar, the common man seems to have access to them like never before. The salaries and the affordability of items are within a middle class man’s reach.
My husband and I are avid lovers of good n tasty food irrespective of the cuisine. Also being vegetarians, we tend to be even more critical of the vegetarian fanfare available out there.
I decided to start this blog for all the food lovers of Chennai to start with and then slowly expand as inputs come in from people from other metros, so we could have a nation-wide database of places to eat and so on...
Street-food (Kayandhi bhavan, T.Nagar) in Chennai is something we hardly see but there are a few pockets which dish out mouth-watering delicacies such as idly-sambar, fried rice, omelets so on and so forth. Adding to that list is Madras bhel which has a lot more veggies as compared to the normal bhelpuri.
Saravana bhavan is an out and out southy veggie place. No doubts about the great food served up there as one can gauge by the throngs of people waiting for their turn to sit, relax and have a dig at the idly/masala dosa. It is easily one the top food joints not only in India but also has an international presence. Need I say more? ;) I recently went to the place again and tried the sorba's, twas' just amazing as to how a few ingredients could change the flavour of a soup!!
Palimar located at parsn complex close to gemini flyover is an extremely fun place for the entire family. with a recent change in management the food is extremely goos, but the service needs to improvise. but they have a variety of options that cater to all age groups and the cuisines are south and north india, chinese and continental.
Woodlands is a landmark in Chennai. Strategically placed close to the Gemini flyover it has been very consistent in its service and food range. It has a large fan following esp. people who have been going there for
more than 20 years. New Woodlands on Radhakrishnan road also has good restaurants like Vrindavan esp. for the international crowd. Unfortunately, it has been razed to the ground recently.
Murugan idly in T.Nagar boasts of an authentic spread of tiffin varieties on a banana leaf!! There is a huge fan following so much so that there are people waiting to have a bite even at night 11pm. They also have branches in Besant nagar and Anna nagar.
Olives at Deccan plaza Royapettah is a veggie lover’s haven. They always seem to have some kind of food festival completely catering to the vegetarian crowd.
Eden at Harrisons, Nungambakkam and Besant nagar has a good spread of south, north Indian, and continental food. They have an awesome desert by the name “the last time I ever saw my waist”, it’s truly sinful
Little Italy in Nungambakkam is an all Italian restaurant and have tasty mouth watering Italian dishes right from appetizers to pizzas and pastas.
Creme Centre on Chamiers Rd in R.A.Puram is a chain of restaurants from Mumbai. They have an awesome spread of mumbai chaats, mexican fare and other items. They are famous for their chana-bhatura and paav-bhaji.
Cholayil Sanjeevanam on Nungambakkam high road, opp. good sheperd school, is a great option for health conscious folks. It has authentic kerala cuisine touch to it. Herbal water to warm water served in copper glasses are very wondrous to your tummy:)
Sandeepha is a new entrant in the list of pure veggie resturants. it is a very good option for steaming hot upma/ pongal/ utthapam etc. they have branches in T.Nagar( opp murugan indly on G.N. Chetty rd), Mylapore(on TTK road, close to sankara hall), and Anna Nagar.
So far I have added all the places that I have been to and would be adding more, meanwhile I welcome posts from all of you out there to make this blog a successful database for people to refer to while eating out in Chennai.
